Committee Description
The Transportation Options Network for Seniors (TONS) Rural Subcommittee was formed in December, 2008 to address rural transportation options for older adults in Manitoba. Rural Transportation was one of five priority areas outlined by TONS predecessor, Seniors Transportation Working Group (STWG) in their 2008 Action Plan.
The 2006 report on the Mobility Needs and Transportation Issues of the Aging Population in Rural Manitoba provides important background information to the Rural Subcommittee. This report also helped to inform the areas of responsibility adopted by the committee.
Recent activities of the Rural Subcommittee include research on the Mobility Disadvantaged Transportation Program (MDTP) through Round Table consultations. The aim of this research was to examine the opportunities and barriers of operating and accessing a successful handi-van program in rural areas of the province.
Future plans of the Rural Subcommittee include playing a supportive role in the development of a network of stakeholders concerned with transportation options for older adults in rural Manitoba. This network will act as a platform for communication and information sharing between handi-van operators, service providers and other stakeholders with potential to grow into more.
The TONS Rural Subcommittee has representations from various groups including senior resource coordinators; handi-van board members; researchers; provincial and federal government stakeholders; and members of the francophone community.
