Sub-Committee Descriptions
Private Transportation Sub Committee
CHAIR: Gerry Rheault
Private transportation represents some of the most important mobility options for seniors as this category includes driving, informal rides from friends and family formal volunteer driving programs, as well as taxi provision. This priority area focuses on promoting safe driving through driver education programs, supporting the transition from driving, as well as reducing barriers to the use of taxi services.
Public Transportation Sub Committee
CHAIR: Connie Newman
Public transportation is an important source of mobility for older adults in both urban and rural areas of Manitoba. There are several initiatives that could be undertaken to further accommodate the needs of seniors. The areas of action identified in this priority area include the fine-tuning of the accessibility of public transit services, the coordination of community shuttles, the improved efficiency of Handi-transit in Winnipeg and the Mobility Disadvantaged Transit Program in rural Manitoba, and the expansion of the DART system within Winnipeg.
Rural Transportation Sub Committee
CHAIR: Sylvia Nilsson Barkman
The complexity of providing adequate transportation in rural areas of Manitoba is becoming increasingly recognized as a priority issue to ensure a sustained quality of life for rural seniors. Objectives within this priority area include the development of a stakeholder network, the creation of a comprehensive inventory of mobility resources, the integration and coordination of transportation services, and the improved affordability of transportation.
